The WEEKES family history goes back to the civil war, and very probably a long time before that.
|
|
A collection of family papers is held by the Devon Record Office, recording property transactions since 1637, these list many names and relationships.
|
|
More recently, 5x gt William moved from the family home in Chagford (East of Dartmoor) to Bradstone (West) when he married Ann WILLIAMS. William was very successful, and bought large properties (farms) in nearby Lamerton, which his son and grandson (both Walters) farmed.
|
|
William's will ensured that his estate eventually passed through the eldest male line, thus when 4x gt Walter died in 1857, his nephew claimed the entire family estates in Lamerton, leaving comparitively little for our 'side' of the family.
|
|
The will also refers to "legitimate issue of the body of [his grandchildren]", as gt grandfather Walter John WEEKES was not "legitimate issue" this further reduced our chances of getting anything from the estate!.
