The name STANTON is derived from:-
(English) Means "farmstead on stony ground". From one of the many places named Stanton, Staunton in Britain.

STANTON STORY

The STANTONs came from Ripley in Surrey until 4x James (a bricklayer) apparently went to work on the construction of the "Wey and Arun Junction Canal" (a motorway construction project of its day). After construction, James became the Lock Keeper and "Wharfinger" at nearby Bramley lock (the first on the new canal). Here he raised his family, and first son James married Esther BAVERSTOCK, who was the Lock Keeper’s daughter from Rowner Lock, which was the last lock on the canal.

Bramley Wharf - Lock Keeper's Cottage c1868 - family home of the STANTONs since c1818. It was probably built by 4x gt. grandfather James, who was a bricklayer before joining the canal company.

The picture was taken looking across Bramley lock. The figure in the top hat is (uncle) William STANTON, brother of 3x gt. grandfather James. The woman in the picture may be Maria STANFORD his houskeeper.

Below the same view May 2001, picture taken from new road "Stanton's Wharf".
