John and Maria started their family in Leek (Staffs), but then moved (with two young daughters) to Essex c1828. They had three children in Billercay, and then a fourth in Coggeshall (1834). John was a silk weaver, and both Leek and Coggeshall have a history of silk manufacturer. By 1838 (birth of next child), the family were back in Leek, however in the next ten years they moved to Kingston upon Thames (Surrey), and returned again to Leek. Whilst in Kingston they 'lost' two daughters (married) and gained another (Mary Jane their youngest child).
