Progress 2013

Last updated 21 Dec 2013

My persistence in searching for as much as I could find finally paid off in the most astonishing way. I had followed 3xGt grandmother Esther BAVERSTOCK`s cousins
and their descendants all the way from Surrey to Sarah FENN in Stratford (Essex, where the Olympics were held), and found she married Frederick BREWSTER in 1905
(they actually married in Epping, which is where Janet & I married).

Nothing unusual in the marriage except that it seemed familiar. On investigation, I discovered I had duplicate records for Sarah and Frederick, and their son.
In other words, I had already found Frederick marrying Sarah, this was because his mother was Jane nee ALLSOP, and ALLSOP was Gt.grandmother Emma's maiden name.

What I had turned up was that when “The Old Man” married Mary BRENNAN in 1909 that was four years after the two sides of the family had already been linked by
Frederick marrying Sarah ( Frederick was Mary BRENNAN's 2nd cousin once removed, and Sarah was The Old Man's 3rd cousin once removed (please see ALLSOP-BAVERSTOCK
families double connection link).

I have always presumed that The Old Man met Mary because he was stationed in Regents Park barracks, near where Mary was living. But does this mean they met through
a family connection?. I suppose its possible, but it doesn’t seem likely to me. I do know that Emma (ALLSOP) BRENNAN kept in touch with her siblings, but there
is no evidence of contact with her cousins, let alone 2nd cousins. Also, father said that The Old Man didn’t keep in touch with his own sister, so is it likely
that he was in contact with cousins? (by the time he was stationed in Aldershot, near his 'roots', those cousins had moved to Essex ( now East London ). So at
the moment I'm putting this down to an amazing coincidence, never the less, it is an interesting conundrum!.

After a long `barren` period, I have finally found some more direct ancestors (on the STANTON side, all near the Surrey villages of Elstead and Thursley).

I have identified the parents of 6xgt Gfather Edmund AUSTIN as 7xgt John AUSTIN and Elizabeth (SMITH), and John`s father as 8xgt Edmund AUSTIN.

Also 7xgt Gfather Henry STOVOLD`s parents have been identified as 8xgt Henry STOVOLD and Margaret (WOODIER), and his in laws -- parents of Mary (WHEELER)--
as 8xgt Nicholas WHEELER and Mary (BOOKHAM).

(The AUSTIN and STOVOLD branches of the tree unite to produce 5x gt. Jane AUSTIN, who marries Henry PLEDGER. Their daughter Sarah married James STANTON in 1805).

I have been unable to trace the new names (WOODIER, BOOKHAM and SMITH) back any further, all marry into the family in the mid - late 1600's, and records are sparse.

This is the third time that SMITH has appeared in the STANTON tree, all in different places, and not related to each other.

After Margaret (WOODIER)`s death in 1661, Henry STOVOLD married again, to Jane SKIDMORE, however there were no children from this marriage, and Jane is not directly related to us.

Progress 2011/2012

Research into the STANTON/ MacLEAN families has become extremely difficult. It is possible that I've gone as far as I can, at
least on our `direct` ancestors. Although I do keep finding small amounts of information about distant cousins/ aunts/ uncles.

Currently I have traced the STANTON and WEEKES families back to 11xgt grandparents, which is really pleasing. However that means I have found just four, out of over eight thousand direct ancestors of that generation ( which is before the English Civil War). So, in theory, an awful lot of work left to do, but the likleyhood of being able to trace most of the other lines back that far seems
remote, as few parish registers still in existance go back much before 1700.

I have spent a great deal of time tring to make my data more available on this web site. All the data you can now see is live and up to date, as its from the same database that I use whilst researching.

I welcome any corrections or additional information to improve the database.

Whilst setting up the database, I needed some `real` information to test the update features of the system, so I had to `branch
out` into the other sides of the family, so the database does now contain some limited information on the CLEMENTS, SIMS and MAJOR families, as well as Janet's TIPLADY tree.

Please feel free to have an explore around the new features of the site, and let me know if you have any difficulties using it or
cant find something/one you believe should be there.
